Commercial CompostingNorthside College Prep, in conjunction with SEAO, has received grant money to pilot a commercial composting program.
Thanks to CPS and Seven Generations Ahead all Northside food waste and lunch trays are diverted from a landfill and made into compost in Sheridan, IL. |
Expansion of Recycling ProgramSEAO expanded Northside's recycling program to accommodate for plastic water bottles, juice boxes, paper, milk cartons, and aluminum in classrooms. As you can see in the charts above, recycling increased by seven times.
Take One sings have been posted on paper towel dispensors in all bathrooms around the school. Americans do, in fact, use 13 billion paper towels each year. If everyone used one paper towel less everyday, we would save 671 million pounds of paper per year. The "Shake and Fold" method is an effective strategy to reduce your paper towel use.
Watch this TedTalk to never forget it! |
Hoop HouseA hoop house, a plastic-covered greenhouse, is beginning to be built in the backyard! The hoop house will be managed by a hoop house colloquium organized under SEAO. Next semester, we will be donating our harvest to local food pantries and hopefully by next fall, the produce will be incorporated into the cafeteria and onto students lunch plates.
